Resources for

Everyone

Y’all we’re sharing a few resources we love.

As we continue our learning journey, we will continue to update here - happy learning!

This list is a compilation of teachers we admire, folx we have studied with, and advocates/activists we continue to learn from on our journey to being future ancestors!

BIPOC + LGBTQIA2SMāhū+ folx

Let’s talk our financial value

If you identify as BIPOC + LGBTQIA2SMāhū+, you may have some questions about your financial value in yoga + wellness spaces. Same! We want to create some transparency and share our approach and why. Because LBH money is hard for us!

How much do we pay at PKY?

$65 for program-contracted teachers

$35 for apprentice teachers

+$15 additional pay to mentor teachers

$65 for our studio BIPOC + LGBTQIA2SMāhū+ teachers

Why is this information important?

Equity is a key value for us. When we talk about equity, we’re talking about access. Access to training, studios, teachers, and resources (props, transportation fare, books, etc.) We are centering the intergenerational trauma BIPOC folx hold and traumas experienced by marginalized folx living in a colonized Hawai’i.

Equity in yoga for BIPOC + LGBTQIA2SMāhū+ folx means being paid for your work. If you’re teaching in a predominantly white space (….most yoga spaces in Hawai’i…) and the “diversity” teacher is you, make sure you’re getting paid for the additional labor and wisdom you’re sharing by being you.

If you need help, need to process, or just need to talk…reach out to us, we got you!

I’m a Yoga teacher…now what?

Where to teach?

To quote Adrienne Maree Brown, “Small is good. Small is all. (The large is a reflection of the small)”

First, know there are so many ways to “teach” Yoga. So let’s start small.

  • Sādhanā: your home practice. I was given some advice many years ago that our home practice is for you. If you’re practicing what you teach, that’s work. And although nothing is absolute, this idea changed the way I came to the mat for myself!

  • In our homes: share this knowledge. If we want to disrupt intergenerational trauma, we can start at home. We can share and begin getting well with our ‘ohana!

  • In our community: practice together. Teach with PKY and join our community!

  • In “yoga-land”: there are lots of options, try to listen to what space resonates with you and who/where you want to teach. Resorts, private clubs, private clients, studios, virtual studios, gyms, schools, and many more…

    • Y’all we aren’t going to lie. Yoga-land can be a challenging place for BIPOC and marginalized identities. You may be the only one - we are working on changing that AND that change can start with you!

Few tips to starting a business…

** you’re starting a business, you’re an entrepreneur!!!

Please note, that this is a brief starting place, it is not comprehensive. We are not experts, only sharing our experience.

Choices to make:

  • Am I operating as a sole proprietor or going to incorporate/make a non-profit?

  • Where do I want to teach?

  • Am I a private contractor (W9/1099) or an employee (W2)?

    • This makes a difference in your taxes

  • Who am I marketing to - who am I attracting? Who do I want to work with? Be selective.

  • What type of money am I willing to accept for my knowledge, energy, time, and skills? (note - go to the next section)

Do I have more questions? There are tons of online sources and teachers e-mail us if you need some recommendations.

Any other questions - e-mail us!

We may not have all the answers, but maybe someone in our collective does. We are generating a new wellness community in Hawai’i together!

Yoga Studio + Wellness Owners

First, we’re excited you’re here and on this journey! We know, it is not an easy one and it takes so much introspection and grace to get here.

Second, we recommend reaching out to us directly. We have trainings and do consultation sessions, depending on where you are with your own “work.” (Let’s be clear it is your work!) As one of our wise students said, “by asking to decolonize your space you’re admitting your space is colonized!”

Regarding diversity, before you hire the “diverse” teacher and think you’ve done your “work.” It is important to understand how you operate and perpetuate patriarchy, capitalism, and white supremacy culture in your business model. Again we recommend, reaching out to us directly for training and consultation.

We hope to hear from you, but if you’re not there yet here are some spaces to start:

Are you a studio looking to bring diversity and decolonize your yoga + wellness space?
